This episode, titled “ The Defeat of Superman ” is notable for featuring the first on-screen depiction of Kryptonite, and consequently the first time Superman was shown weakened or in danger.
Happy King, a mobster that Superman had almost caught (but fled to Europe) sent a message to via Clark Kent he wanted to speak to Superman to settle their differences. At this time nobody on the show knew that Superman was an alien, but one scientist, Dr. Meldini (who apparently still knew of the extinct planet Krypton) suspected. So they set a trap for him, rigging a tommy-gun to open fire on Superman when he arrived at the arrange meeting, and filming the result. It appears that each bullet was
Meldini goes to work creating synthetic Kryptonite; with the only known traces of actual element being used in the bullet that hurt Superman. Using Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen as bait, King traps Superman in a room with a hunk of Kryptonite in it, making him too weak to escape the locked room. After multiple failed attempts to get rid of the Kryptonite, Jimmy crams it into a lead pipe leading to a nearby sink, and stomp the ends of the pipe clean.
